`Kuroshitsuji Chapter 61

Spoiler alert

Finally, a flashback to Ciel's past! Frankly speaking, I am curious to the events that happened when he was being sacrificed. Seriously, what's with that smirk on Sebastian's face and why was he so interested in Ciel? Was there something on Ciel's soul that he saw or had he witnessed the struggles of Ciel in the cult before appearing, thinking he can have a nice cat and mouse game with our little master?

Anyway, it started with Undertaker fighting with Ronald, Grell and Sebastian, and it appeared that they were to him, mice to a cat. And all shinigamis are confirmed to be short sighted! However Undertaker was not wearing any spectacles, so he is not short-sighted because he forfeited being one, or because he was wearing contact lenses, or because he went through lasik surgery (if they had that in Victorian England, lol)

Then climax came when Undertaker took Ciel hostage and Sebastian was forced to intervened. Ciel was thrown over the railings and Sebastian in his attempt to save Ciel, turned his back on Undertaker and as a result, was stabbed. Through the back and through the front.

Not a pretty sight... but it highlights the bond that Sebastian had for Ciel, it's as if he didn't care about himself anymore, that he was made to protect Ciel, to save him. I'm not shipping them but it appears that despite them constantly engaging in witty banters and trying to do each other in, they had forged a strong bond and Ciel is no longer the chess piece but the chess player. With Ciel gone, the game will end and Sebastian would have no one to play with. Sebastian wants to avoid solitude and thus he had to have an interesting playmate.

I've also been thinking, Claudia (no, not Claude) P, did it stand for Claudia Phantomhive? In Baron Kelvin's flashback (when he meets the evil noblemen chapter 32), there was a lady standing behind Undetaker. The Undertaker had obviously known Vincent Phantomhive and the Phantomhive family for ages.

Here's some Math
The date on the locket etched on the locket: 1866.
The present time of story: 1889
Years difference: 23 years
If we assume that that lady is really Claudia, then it would mean that she is Vincent's sister? Could it be that he had once loved Claudia but she had perished for some unknown reason?

However, we can't rule the possibility that it may be Vincent's Mother and that Undertaker could even be the father of Vincent. Which is why Vincent was in the "dark" side and Ciel could summon Sebastian, which explains which Sebastian was so interested in him. If that was so, then Undertaker may not have wanted to kill Ciel, just wanted him as a hostage because his main aim is Sebastian. Then that locket must be given to Vincent from his Claudia on his birthdate.

Or maybe he just loved Claudia but she ended up marrying someone else, but had in the end died. This created a void that left Undertaker broken. (think romeo and juliet without romeo dying!) Undertaker had said he quit being a Shinigami and as far as I know, love does drive one to do so. He also mentioned about lacking something, that humans will attempt to fill the void within them. As a retired Shinigami, he could have been an unmortal mortal. All the corpse he was collecting under the guise of an Undertaker was for this project of his and he had wanted to revive that someone - Claudia.

Anyway, plot development! A must read for those interested to see Undertaker, Ronald, Grell, Sebastian and Ciel! Oh wait, that's like everyone but it's badass awesome!
